I have no experience with a plc. I want to teach myself how to use them. Currently I am a house electrician but I am bored. Which system is the best to learn on and is there demand for PLC programmers in the UK?
Rockwell is one of the easiest PLC programs to learn as it is very intuative, but before you invest any money, try to learn the basics of ladder, sequencial and FB programming. There are some very good articals on the web and some of the budget programming software tools will allow you to write very simple code and master the basic principals first.
Chris is right about Rockwell in my opinion. If you visit Rockwell and register, there is a free download of RSLogix 500 that will allow you to program a 10 point Micrologix. It's a little hard to find, but I think the product number is something like 9324RL0050ENE for the programming software and 9355WAB100ENE for RSLinx Lite, the communication software. This is the real thing and will allow you to program only the 10 point Micrologix. If you search on Ebay you might find one at a reasonable price.
